Prepare pie crust using recipe for 2-crust pie. Roll out between wax paper and set aside.
Peel, quarter and core apples. Slice crosswise into equal thicknesses. Using the empty pie pan, fill with sliced apples until you have a slightly heaping pile.
Combine sugar, flour, spices and a dash of salt in a bowl large enough to hold the apples. Mix with the apples.
Line bottom of pie plate with rolled crust. Fill with apple mixture; dot with butter. Adjust top crust, crimp and seal edges, cut slits for steam to escape. Sprinkle lightly with sugar.
Bake at 400°F for 50 minutes or until done.
