1 lb cheddar cheese, shredded
8 eggs, beaten
1 pinch salt, to taste
1 pinch black pepper, to taste
2 ⅔ cups milk
⅓ cup butter or margarine, melted
16 slices bread or use french loaf

Cut crusts off bread and cube. Grate the cheese. Alternate layers of bread and cheese in a 9 x 13 unbuttered casserole dish.

Beat together eggs, milk and melted butter. Pour over layers.

Bake 1 1/2 hours at 350°F.

Note: Sausage, ham or bacon can be added in layers if desired. Cook and crumble prior to adding.
